Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and a prominent political rival joined forces on Wednesday to establish a wartime Cabinet responsible for overseeing the response to the heinous attack by Hamas militants over the weekend.
In the isolated Gaza Strip, Palestinian suffering intensified as Israeli airstrikes razed neighborhoods, and the sole power plant ran out of fuel.
Netanyahu made a solemn commitment to “crush and obliterate” Hamas. He declared in a televised address, “Every member of Hamas faces a grim fate.”
The formation of the new Cabinet reflects a measure of unity after years of divisive politics and comes at a time when the Israeli military appears increasingly inclined to launch a ground offensive in Gaza, the Associated Press reported.
The conflict has already claimed the lives of at least 2,300 individuals on both sides.
The Israeli government is under immense public pressure to dismantle Hamas, following the breach of a border fence by its militants on Saturday, resulting in the massacre of hundreds of Israelis in their homes, on the streets, and at an outdoor music festival.
Netanyahu asserted that the attackers committed heinous acts, including binding boys and girls, shooting them in the head, burning people alive, sexually assaulting women, and beheading soldiers.
The allegations made by the prime minister have not been independently verified, and authorities have not immediately provided additional details.
Nonetheless, rescue workers and eyewitnesses have recounted harrowing scenes, including the killing of elderly individuals and discovering blood-soaked rooms filled with slaughtered civilians.
