On Tuesday, former NFL player Sergio Brown was apprehended in connection with the murder of his 73-year-old mother, as confirmed by both his family and the police.

San Diego law enforcement took Sergio Brown, a former safety who played for the New England Patriots and the Indianapolis Colts, into custody following the issuance of a first-degree murder warrant.

He now awaits extradition to Illinois to face the charges, as stated by the Maywood, Illinois police, NBC News reported.

Sergio Brown had been missing for nearly a month, during which time the body of his mother, Myrtle Jean Simmons-Brown, was discovered on September 16 near a creek behind her residence in the Chicago suburb of Maywood.

The Cook County medical examiner’s office reported that she had suffered “multiple injuries due to assault.”

Maywood police revealed that Sergio Brown, aged 35, was apprehended upon re-entering the United States from Mexico.

Simmons-Brown’s family said in a statement Wednesday they are “heartened by the news that Sergio Brown has been apprehended and returned to the United States unharmed.”
