The United Nations reported that over 338,000 individuals have been compelled to leave their residences in the Gaza Strip due to the ongoing heavy Israeli bombardment in the Palestinian enclave.
The UN’s humanitarian agency, OCHA, stated on Thursday that “widespread displacement throughout the Gaza Strip” persists.
By late Wednesday, the number of displaced individuals in Gaza had increased by an additional 75,000 people compared to the figure reported 24 hours earlier, reaching a total of 338,934.
This announcement coincided with Israel’s continued airstrikes on Hamas targets within the densely populated Gaza Strip, home to 2.3 million people, in response to the unexpected attack by militants on Saturday, Barrons reported.
Israeli authorities reported that 1,200 people, the majority of whom were civilians, lost their lives in this onslaught, making it the most severe in the country’s history.
In Gaza, officials have documented over 1,000 casualties resulting from Israel’s ongoing campaign of air and artillery strikes.
OCHA also noted that nearly 220,000 people, equivalent to two-thirds of those displaced, have sought refuge in schools administered by the United Nations agency supporting Palestinian refugees, UNRWA.
