This strategic decision involves conducting operational tests that will introduce a 100 kW laser as an active component within the Israel Defense Forces’ arsenal.
Rafael, the company responsible for designing and manufacturing the Iron Beam, has customized the laser system to effectively counter a wide range of threats, Bulgarian Military reported.
The system has demonstrated its capability in intercepting various threats, including rocket artillery shells, mortar rounds, and drones from distances spanning several kilometers.
One of the compelling advantages of the high-energy laser weapon is its cost-effectiveness.
Each shot fired from the Iron Beam costs approximately one thousand dollars, a stark contrast to the Iron Dome ABM system’s Tamir interceptor missile, which is valued between 40 and 50 thousand US dollars.
