The US military in Iraq successfully intercepted two drones that were targeting Iraq’s Al-Asad air base.

This air base hosts US forces, along with several other facilities in Iraq. The officials, speaking anonymously, have not disclosed the suspected party behind the attack.

This incident coincided with US President Joe Biden’s visit to Israel and occurred following an explosion at a Gaza hospital, which some regional countries have attributed to Israel.

Since the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, several prominent pro-Iran politicians in Iraq have issued threats against the US.

They have warned that if the US is perceived as supporting Israel, American forces in Iraq could become targets, the Jerusalem Post reported.

Pro-Iranian militias in Iraq have targeted US forces over the past four years, increasingly employing kamikaze drones for these attacks.

Following a deadly assault on US personnel in 2019, protesters also targeted the US embassy in Baghdad.

In response to these events, the US conducted a targeted strike in January 2020, resulting in the killing of IRGC general Qasem Soleimani and Iraqi militia leader Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis.
