Republican Representative Mike Johnson from Louisiana was chosen as the Speaker of the House of Representatives on Wednesday, thereby bringing an end to a three-week-long leadership crisis that had immobilized Congress.
As the Vice Chairman of the House Republican Conference and a staunch conservative, Johnson had kept a relatively low public profile until this week when he emerged into the spotlight after securing the party’s nomination for the role of Speaker.
All 220 Republicans who participated in the voting supported Johnson, despite his being the fourth nominee selected by the GOP conference within a two-week period, during which the deeply divided party struggled to rally behind a candidate with sufficient backing, CNBC reported.
In his address to Congress following his election, Johnson expressed his intent to bring a resolution to the House floor as the first order of business, showing solidarity with Israel in its conflict with Hamas.
All 209 Democrats who voted Wednesday cast their ballot for Minority Leader Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y.
