On Sunday, House Speaker Mike Johnson pledged to advance a $14.5 billion aid package for Israel once the House reconvenes later this week. This decision was made during his first GOP conference call since assuming the leadership role.

Johnson’s choice to present a separate funding bill for Israel, which he assured members would be fully funded, and to separate it from Ukraine aid, sets the stage for a potential confrontation with the Democratic-controlled Senate and White House.

They prefer linking these two issues, as standalone Ukraine aid faces an uncertain path in the GOP-led House, CNN reported.

Johnson mentioned in a recent CNN interview that he supports Ukraine aid but believes there should be “conditions” attached to it.

This development occurs during the first week of Johnson’s tenure as House Speaker, and it coincides with the looming expiration of government funding next month.

This situation presents an immediate test of the Louisiana Republican’s ability to navigate appropriations bills and secure aid for Israel, all while facing motions aimed at specific lawmakers.
