The U.S. House of Representatives passed a Republican plan on Thursday to allocate $14.3 billion in aid to Israel while reducing funding for the Internal Revenue Service.

This move, despite Democrats’ insistence that it won’t advance in the Senate and the White House’s promise of a veto.

The measure was approved with a vote of 226 to 196, primarily along party lines, which is a departure from the typically strong bipartisan support for providing aid to Israel.

Twelve Democrats voted in favor alongside 214 Republicans, while two Republicans joined 194 Democrats in opposing the bill, Reuters reported.

The bill was introduced as a response to the attack on Israel by Iran-backed Hamas militants, marking the first significant legislative action under the new Republican House Speaker, Mike Johnson.

However, due to the bill’s combination of aid for Israel with a reduction in funding for the Internal Revenue Service and the omission of aid for Ukraine, President Joe Biden has pledged to veto it.

Additionally, Senator Chuck Schumer, the majority leader of the Democratic-controlled Senate, has stated that he will not bring the bill up for a vote.
