The eruption of conflict in Gaza and Israel in October resulted in a significant uptick in hate-driven incidents targeting Jews, as indicated by the latest crime data from the NYPD.
In October, bias crimes in the city surged by 124% compared to the same month in 2022, according to the data released by the Police Department on Wednesday.
The count of bias incidents in New York City rose to 101, a stark increase from 45 reported in October of the previous year.
Notably, the surge was primarily driven by a substantial rise in anti-Jewish incidents, with 69 cases reported last month in the city compared to 22 in October 2022—a notable 214% increase, as highlighted by officials, the New York Daily News reported.
“We’re feeling it 100%,” Bob Moskovitz, executive coordinator of the Flatbush Shomrim Safety Patrol in Brooklyn, said. “Our hotline, which the community utilizes to report any incident, has probably increased in this last month and a half by 300%. The phone is simply not stopping.”
During the same month outlined in the NYPD’s crime statistics, the Shomrim patrol received almost 1,600 calls, a significant rise from the typical monthly call volume of about 500, noted Moscowitz.
New York City is not the sole location experiencing a surge in hate crimes.
In the past few weeks, researchers from the Southern Poverty Law Center have observed a rise in documented and reported incidents of antisemitic harassment targeting individuals and the occurrence of “fake” bomb threats against Jewish institutions, as mentioned in an email from the center.
