A prominent Spanish politician, Alejo Vidal-Quadras Roca, faced an apparent assassination attempt when he was shot in the face in Madrid.

The former head of Spain’s People’s Party in Catalonia, Alejo, was ambushed by a gunman on a motorbike in a wealthy neighborhood in the Spanish capital.

Despite the attack, Alejo, who has also served as an MEP and First Vice President of the European Parliament, is reported to be stable and conscious.

The incident occurred in the Salamanca neighborhood in the center of Madrid, near Alejo’s residence, around 2 pm. Police and paramedics responded to the scene, the U.S. Sun reported.

Detectives are currently searching for two suspects who reportedly awaited Alejo and fled on a black Yamaha motorbike.

The politician was allegedly shot at point-blank range from a mere two meters away as he walked to his car, sustaining a single gunshot wound to the jaw.

Witnesses described the attacker as a “young, small man” dressed in jeans and a dark coat. The gunman, wearing a black helmet, reportedly dismounted the motorbike and shot Alejo “at least once.”

The area of the shooting has been cordoned off by the police, and as of now, no arrests have been made.
