During a spacewalk around the International Space Station, NASA astronauts Jasmin Moghbeli and Loral O’Hara accidentally released their toolbox, and the floating kit might be visible from Earth.

The astronauts spent six hours and 42 minutes conducting maintenance work outside the ISS. Unfortunately, a satchel-sized bag containing tools floated away, now orbiting the Earth ahead of the space station.

The incident was captured on camera by the astronauts’ Japanese colleague Satoshi Furukawa, who inadvertently photographed the bag while capturing an image of Mount Fuji.

NASA clarified that the tools in the bag were not required for the remainder of the spacewalk, Sky News reported.

Mission Control assessed the bag’s trajectory and concluded that the risk of it recontacting the station was low, ensuring the safety of the onboard crew and the space station.

The bag has been classified as space junk and is anticipated to re-enter Earth’s orbit in the coming months, likely burning up upon re-entry.

EarthSky mentioned that some individuals may be able to observe it with binoculars as it floats around.
