President Joe Biden is quietly observing his 81st birthday on Monday with a subdued family celebration, all while gearing up for a challenging election year.
Despite the low-key nature of the festivities, the occasion brings attention to one of his significant campaign challenges – his advanced age and the associated perceptions among voters that his physical and mental sharpness may be declining.
During the annual Thanksgiving turkey pardon on Monday morning, Biden appeared to mix up pop stars Britney Spears and Taylor Swift.
Both the White House and the campaign privately acknowledge that age is a vulnerability, and efforts are made to minimize potential gaffes while projecting vitality, CNN reported.
This year, Biden was prescribed custom orthotics to address a “stiff gait” identified during his annual physical examination.
Biden currently holds the distinction of being the oldest president in history, surpassing Ronald Reagan, who was 77 at the conclusion of his second term.
If re-elected in 2024, Biden would reach 86 by the end of his second term.
Meanwhile, Trump, nearing 83 around the same time, would assume the title of the oldest president in history should he be elected.
