On Friday, a Wisconsin man entered a guilty plea for the firebombing incident targeting the office of a prominent anti-abortion group last year.
Hridindu Roychowdhury, 29, confessed to hurling two Molotov cocktails through the window of Wisconsin Family Action’s Madison office on May 8, 2022.
This act occurred less than a week after a draft opinion suggesting the U.S. Supreme Court’s potential reversal of its 1973 Roe v. Wade decision legalizing abortion.
One of the Molotov cocktails thrown into the office failed to ignite, while the other ignited a bookcase.
Roychowdhury also acknowledged spray-painting the message “If abortions aren’t safe, then you aren’t either” on the exterior of the building, the Associated Press reported.
Fortunately, no one was present in the office at the time of the incident. Investigators linked Roychowdhury to the firebombing in January when surveillance footage from a protest against police brutality at the state Capitol in Madison revealed individuals spray-painting graffiti resembling the message left on the Wisconsin Family Action office.
The footage also showed two individuals leaving the area in a pickup truck, leading investigators to Roychowdhury’s residence in Madison.
Facing a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine, Roychowdhury may receive a reduced sentence as prosecutors are recommending leniency due to his acceptance of responsibility for the crime.
A sentencing hearing is scheduled for Feb. 14. As of Friday, Roychowdhury’s attorneys had not responded to an email requesting comment.
