Ohio GOP Representative Bill Johnson is set to step down from Congress on January 21, taking on the role of the new head of Youngstown State University.
This move will contribute to the reduction of the already slim House GOP majority.
Following the recent resignations of Representative Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) and the expulsion of Representative George Santos (R-N.Y.),Johnson’s departure will leave Republicans with control over only 219 seats.
Once he vacates his position, the GOP can afford to lose just two members from their conference for a vote to secure passage, Politico reported.
“Bill submitted his official resignation from Congress today, effective at the end of day on January 21, 2024, paving the way for him to begin his presidency this month,” Michael Peterson, chair of the school’s board of trustees, wrote in a message to the university community.
Peterson stated that the decision signifies Johnson’s presence on campus happening “earlier than expected.”
Additionally, the outgoing congressman plans to “continue to visit campus as often as his schedule allows to continue meeting with students, faculty and staff.”
Although Johnson disclosed his acceptance of the university position in late November, he had not previously specified the exact date of his departure from Congress.
