Johnson Leads Group of GOP Lawmakers to Texas Border

On Wednesday, numerous Republican lawmakers journeyed to the U.S.-Mexico border in Texas to witness firsthand the migrant crisis, with the intention of advocating for increased funding for the region that can garner bipartisan support.

The White House reports that negotiations regarding border funding are “progressing in the right direction” as both political parties work toward reaching a consensus.

Republicans have stipulated that any new assistance for Ukraine should be linked to heightened U.S. border security measures.

Taking action on their stance, the GOP is actively engaging with the border situation, CBN reported.

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) and 60 other Republican lawmakers conducted a visit to the Texas border, emphasizing the border’s significance as a focal point in the upcoming election year.

Standing at the U.S. border where a continuous influx of migrants occurs, Johnson urged the White House to utilize more executive orders to address the escalating number of illegal crossings.

In Eagle Pass, Texas, House Republicans expressed apprehension after the southern border witnessed an unprecedented surge in encounters with illegal migrants last month.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection, as confirmed to ABC News, reported encountering over 300,000 migrants in December, surpassing the previous record of nearly 270,000 in September 2023.
