On Wednesday, a man assaulted a Las Vegas judge in her courtroom, compelling her to seek cover and injuring a marshal in the process, as revealed in video obtained by the 8 News Now Investigators.
Deobra Redden, a 30-year-old three-time felon, was present in Clark County District Court Judge Mary Kay Holthus’ courtroom for sentencing on a charge of attempted battery with substantial bodily harm, according to records.
At approximately 11 a.m., Holthus was seated behind the bench when Redden rushed towards her, leaped over the bench, and initiated an attack, as shown in the video shared with the 8 News Now Investigators.
Subsequently, several individuals intervened, grappling with Redden and subduing him on the floor. An alarm also sounded for several minutes, alerting others to the incident.
Prior to the assault, Redden’s attorney had requested probation for his client. In response, Holthus remarked, “I think it’s time he gets a taste of something else.”
On April 23, Redden had allegedly threatened to cause substantial bodily harm, stating he would “bust the kneecaps” of another man, as per documents.
In May, a different judge ordered a competency determination for Redden, leading to his commitment to a state behavioral facility. Redden was subsequently deemed competent by a judge in October.
