For the sixth consecutive year, Mexico recorded over 30,000 murders in 2023, marking the most violent period in the country’s recent history.

Violence has emerged as a central issue in the upcoming June 2024 general election.

However, voters express a lack of confidence in the ability of the two leading presidential contenders to formulate a robust plan for addressing gang violence.

There is growing public frustration with government officials concealing murders by reclassifying them as having occurred due to an “undetermined intention,” Semafor reported.

Experts and leaders express concern that the escalating violence may lead to a regression in democratic norms in Mexico, especially given the country’s existing heavy militarization, with little indication of disarmament in the near future.
