On Sunday, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis officially suspended his Republican presidential campaign, bringing an end to his 2024 White House aspirations just before the New Hampshire primary.
Notably, he threw his support behind his rival, Donald Trump.
With DeSantis stepping aside, Trump and former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley now stand as the last major candidates in the race leading up to Tuesday’s New Hampshire primary.
This development aligns with the desires of Trump’s critics within the GOP, heightening the significance of this week’s contest as the party’s final opportunity to impede the former president’s dominant position in the race.
Despite DeSantis’ withdrawal, his exit video on social media acknowledged Trump’s primary influence and took a critical stance against Nikki Haley, the Associated Press reported.
“It’s clear to me that a majority of Republican primary voters want to give Donald Trump another chance,” DeSantis said.
“I signed a pledge to support the Republican nominee and I will honor that pledge. He has my endorsement because we can’t go back to the old Republican guard of yesteryear, a repackaged form of warmed-over corporatism that Nikki Haley represents,” he said.
