A tragic incident unfolded in South Bend, Indiana, where five children, including a 17-month-old, lost their lives in a wind-whipped house fire, described by officials as a “horrific tragedy.”

At the time of the fire, there were seven individuals in the residence, including one adult and six children. Emergency responders managed to rescue the six children from the engulfed home, but tragically, five of them were later pronounced dead.

The victims’ ages ranged from 17 months to 11 years old.

The incident occurred on Sunday around 6:15 p.m. local time at 222 North LaPorte Ave.

Firefighters from South Bend battled the flames for three hours, finding several children trapped on the second floor of the two-story structure upon arrival, ABC News reported.

The surviving victim, an 11-year-old, was promptly taken to a local hospital and subsequently airlifted to a specialized pediatric burn center in Indianapolis for further treatment.

As of Monday, the 11-year-old remains under medical care.

While one adult present in the house at the time of the fire managed to escape with minor injuries, the loss of the young lives in this devastating incident has left the community in mourning.
