In the latest and deadliest fighting in Gaza this January, Israeli forces advanced deep into western Khan Younis, storming one hospital and placing another under siege.

The troops entered the al-Mawasi district for the first time near the Mediterranean Coast, west of Khan Younis, and targeted the Al-Khair hospital, arresting medical staff, according to Gaza health ministry spokesman Ashraf al Qidra.

As of now, there is no official statement from Israel on the situation at the hospital, and the military spokesperson’s office has provided no comment.

The military later reported that three Israeli soldiers were killed on Monday in southern Gaza, Reuters reported.

Qidra reported at least 50 casualties overnight in Khan Younis, and the siege of medical facilities has prevented rescuers from reaching dozens of dead and wounded.

Tanks have also surrounded another hospital in Khan Younis, al-Amal, the headquarters of the Palestinian Red Crescent, with the agency losing contact with staff there.

Israel alleges that Hamas fighters operate in and around hospitals, a claim that both Hamas and medical staff deny.
