A drone attack overnight on a small US outpost in Jordan resulted in the tragic deaths of three US Army soldiers, with over 30 service members sustaining injuries, as reported by US officials to CNN.
This marks the first instance of US troops being fatally targeted by enemy fire in the Middle East since the commencement of the Gaza war.
Addressing the incident, President Joe Biden, while speaking in South Carolina on Sunday, asserted, “We shall respond.”
The assault occurred at Tower 22 in Jordan, near the Syrian border, representing a significant escalation in an already precarious situation in the Middle East.
Officials attribute the drone attack to Iran-backed militants, and the origin appears to be from Syria, CNN reported.
The responsible militia group is yet to be definitively identified.
On Sunday, US Central Command confirmed in a statement that three service members lost their lives, with at least 34 others injured in a one-way drone attack that struck a base in northeast Jordan.
CENTCOM further disclosed that eight injured service members were medically evacuated for advanced care.
The count of wounded individuals is anticipated to increase as further assessments are conducted.
