El Salvador’s president, Nayib Bukele, is viewed by many as a national hero who confronted the country’s violent gangs with unwavering determination.
However, others see the populist leader as a 21st-century autocrat responsible for widespread human rights abuses and a consolidation of power in his own hands.
Often self-described as the “world’s coolest dictator,” he appears poised to secure a second presidential term in the upcoming election on Sunday, the Associated Press reported.
Despite maneuvering around El Salvador’s constitutional prohibition of reelection in multiple instances, Bukele enjoys the support of seven to nine out of every 10 voters, according to recent polls.
His anticipated victory will solidify his control over the country as his assertive strategies extend beyond the borders of this small Central American nation.
