NYPD ditches its $12,500 Times Square subway police robot after only four months

Just four months after its public introduction, the NYPD has decided to discontinue the use of its subway robot.

In April 2023, Mayor Eric Adams unveiled the AI-backed security robot as a measure to address the escalating crime rates in New York City.

At a press conference in September, Adams expressed optimism about the robot, describing it as an integral part of the future of subway safety and a worthwhile investment, the U.S. Sun reported.

Originally intended to patrol the 42nd Street subway station, the 400-pound, egg-shaped K5 police robot’s deployment in Times Square has now come to an end.
