Senate GOP will block border deal, leaving Ukraine in limbo

Senate Republicans, facing intense pressure from former President Trump, are set to block a procedural motion this week that would initiate debate on a bipartisan border security deal.

This decision leaves funding for the Ukraine war uncertain for the foreseeable future.

If the border security deal fails to progress this week, it suggests that the legislation is unlikely to pass the Senate without significant modifications.

Any alterations to the negotiated asylum and border security reforms, worked out with the White House and Senate Democrats, could jeopardize the entire agreement, The Hill reported.

Senate Republican Whip John Thune (S.D.), whose staff has briefed Republican senators on the comprehensive border security package, stated on Tuesday that a motion to end debate on proceeding to the bill is not expected to receive substantial Republican support.

When questioned on Tuesday morning about the likelihood of any Senate Republicans voting to advance the bill, Thune expressed that it’s “unlikely” because members of his conference desire more time to scrutinize the intricate details of the package.
