Missing U.S. military helicopter found in Southern California; search on for 5 Marines

Authorities announced on Wednesday that a U.S. military helicopter, which had gone missing while transporting five Marines from Nevada to California, has been located.

Search and rescue operations were underway in the mountainous region of Southern California, where snow and rain added to the challenges.

The CH-53E Super Stallion helicopter was discovered east of San Diego in Pine Valley, California, at 9:08 a.m., a few hours after the commencement of search efforts, as reported by the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing on social media.

Various agencies, including federal authorities, the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, and the Civil Air Patrol, collaborated in the search, CBS News reported.

The Marine Corps indicated that the helicopter, en route from Creech Air Force Base in Clark County, Nevada, to Marine Corps Air Station Miramar in San Diego, had been reported overdue on Tuesday.

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre informed reporters on Air Force One, en route to New York City, that President Biden had been briefed on the ongoing search efforts.

The helicopter’s last-known location was reported around 11:30 p.m. on Tuesday, and the sheriff’s department received notice just after 1 a.m. that the helicopter was overdue at Miramar.
