Teen accused of shooting tourist in Times Square charged with attempted murder

A 15-year-old, accused of shooting a Brazilian tourist in the leg in Times Square on Thursday night and subsequently firing at a police officer, has been charged as an adult with two counts of attempted murder.

The teenager, identified as a resident of a migrant shelter in Manhattan who arrived in New York from Venezuela late last year, was ordered held without bail.

The assistant district attorney expressed concerns, stating that he “cannot be trusted to return to court,” according to the New York Daily News.

In addition to the attempted murder charges, the teen is facing assault and weapons possession charges related to the shooting incident that initiated in a sporting goods store and spilled onto the streets of Midtown Manhattan.

The teenager was taken into custody on Friday at a residential house believed to be linked to a family member in Yonkers, the Associate Press reported.

Authorities also consider him a suspect in an armed robbery in the Bronx and a separate shooting in Times Square last month.

During a press conference announcing the arrest on Friday evening, New York City Police Commissioner Edward Caban emphasized that it was an “actual miracle” that no one sustained serious injuries in the shooting.
