Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin underwent general anesthesia on Monday for a non-surgical procedure addressing an “emergent bladder issue,” according to a statement from his doctors.
They assured that he is expected to resume normal duties on Tuesday, and a prolonged hospital stay is not anticipated.
The medical episode led to the cancellation of Austin’s planned trip to Brussels this week.
This hospitalization, initiated on Sunday, marks his third since being diagnosed with prostate cancer in December.
Pentagon Press Secretary Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder, in a press briefing on Monday, could not specify the type of medical procedure Austin underwent, ABC News reported.
It remains unclear whether the bladder issue is related to complications from his December 22 surgery for prostate cancer or an unrelated matter.
Ryder did mention that the secretary no longer requires further treatment for his cancer diagnosis, except for ongoing physical therapy addressing lingering leg pain.
“He is expected to make a full recovery,” he said.
