The chaotic shootout at a Bronx subway station, resulting in the death of one bystander and injuries to five others, originated from a confrontation between rival gangs, as disclosed by the police on Tuesday.
Authorities have released photos of two suspected gunmen who remain at large.
Surveillance images depict one of the suspected individuals, wearing a ski mask, fleeing the scene in a black jacket, a black hooded sweatshirt, and white and red Air Jordan sneakers.
The second suspect is seen in a black Northface jacket, a gray hooded sweatshirt, a black ski mask covering his mouth, dark pants, and black and yellow Air Jordan sneakers, according to police.
“This was a random shooting that occurred on a number 4 train between two rival groups,” NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny told reporters during a briefing on the Monday afternoon shooting, the New York Post reported.
“Once the groups come together on the train, there’s a verbal dispute that quickly leads to a physical fight,” Kenny said. “As the train is pulling into the station at Mount Eden, one round is fired inside the train car.”
“If you can imagine a chaotic scene,” he said. “You have a crowded train pulling into a crowded platform, one shot being fired. Now everybody is trying to scramble to get off the platform.”
Kenny reported that authorities have discovered 19 discharged 9 mm shell casings from the gunfire incident, which extended from the subway platform to the street, occurring shortly before 4:40 p.m.
Law enforcement now suspects the involvement of three shooters: the two individuals currently sought and a 14-year-old boy who sustained gunshot wounds to the leg and ear during the armed altercation.
The teenager is now under scrutiny as a potential third gunman.
Additionally, sources indicate that the suspected teen is also a subject of investigation in a separate shooting incident in the Bronx last month.
