Soccer player struck by lightning, killed during game

A 35-year-old soccer player met a tragic end when he was struck by lightning and fatally injured during a match in Indonesia.

The shocking incident occurred during a friendly game between his team, Football Boots Indonesia, and FC Bandung on Saturday.

Septain Raharja collapsed on the field around 4:20 p.m., and distressing footage of the incident has circulated online.

Fellow players swiftly came to Raharja’s aid, but despite being still breathing when rushed to a local hospital, he was later pronounced dead, the New York Post reported.

The Independent reported that Raharja’s unfortunate fate adds to a series of incidents where soccer players have been struck by lightning in recent years.

Notably, in the Soeratin U-13 Cup last year, another Indonesian player experienced a similar ordeal, remaining unconscious for 20 minutes after being hit by lightning.

Tragically, the sport has witnessed such fatalities before. In March 2004, 18-year-old soccer player Jiang Tao lost his life during a training session at Singapore’s since-demolished Jurang Stadium.

Tao, a member of Sinchi FC, was struck by lightning, marking another somber chapter in the history of lightning-related incidents in soccer.
