Republicans impeach homeland security chief over border crisis

On Tuesday night, House Republicans successfully secured a vote to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, precisely one week after their initial attempt crumbled on the floor.

The vote tally was 214-213, with three Republicans once again dissenting from the impeachment.

Mayorkas now stands as the second Cabinet secretary in U.S. history to face impeachment, marking the first instance in nearly 150 years.

“From his first day in office, Secretary Mayorkas has willfully and consistently refused to comply with federal immigration laws, fueling the worst border catastrophe in American history,” Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., said in a statement. “He has undermined public trust through multiple false statements to Congress, obstructed lawful oversight of the Department of Homeland Security, and violated his oath of office.”

“Since this Secretary refuses to do the job that the Senate confirmed him to do, the House must act,” Johnson continued.

Following the vote, President Joe Biden strongly criticized House Republicans, NBC News reported.

The case will now proceed to the Senate, where acquittal for Mayorkas is highly likely, considering that a two-thirds majority, or 67 senators, is required to convict and remove the secretary.

The Democratic Party, which holds the majority in the upper chamber, makes such a conviction less probable.
