U.S. Probes IDF Strikes That Killed Civilians in Gaza, Use of Phosphorus in Lebanon

The U.S. is currently investigating multiple Israeli airstrikes in Gaza that resulted in the deaths of numerous civilians.

Additionally, there’s an examination into the potential use of white phosphorus by Israel in Lebanon.

The State Department is conducting this probe to ascertain whether Israel, a close ally of the U.S., has improperly utilized its bombs and missiles, resulting in civilian casualties.

The Biden administration is facing a challenging situation, as it has refrained from imposing conditions on arms transfers to pressure Israel, despite growing calls from some members of Congress to do so as the conflict continues.

President Biden’s unwavering support for Israel during its military campaign in Gaza has generated criticism from progressive voters who are troubled by the high number of Palestinian civilian casualties.

However, any shift in this support could lead to accusations of abandonment in Israel’s time of need, the Wall Street Journal reported.

The investigation coincides with the Biden administration’s efforts to negotiate the release of hostages held by Hamas and bring an end to the conflict.

Additionally, Israel is considering a potential invasion of the southern Gaza city of Rafah, despite U.S. warnings against such an operation without a clear plan to protect civilians in the area.
