On Friday, Texas Governor Greg Abbott revealed intentions to construct an 80-acre facility to accommodate up to 1,800 Texas National Guard members near Eagle Pass.
This border city has become a focal point in the ongoing dispute between the state and the Biden administration regarding federal immigration policy.
“Before now, the Texas National Guard had been scattered across this entire region in cramped quarters, away from fellow soldiers and sometimes traveling long distances to do their job,” Abbott said during a news conference, CNN reported.
Governor Abbott highlighted that the planned base camp, aimed at “dramatically improving conditions” for soldiers, is designed to accommodate up to 2,300 personnel and can expand accordingly.
The facility is expected to include amenities such as a dining facility, a recreation center, laundry facilities, individual rooms for troops, and healthcare facilities, according to a statement from Abbott’s office.
Governor Abbott, a Republican, has been in disagreement with President Joe Biden regarding federal immigration policy and the influx of migrants crossing the US-Mexico border.
