Mexico protesters in mass rally against electoral changes

Enormous crowds gathered in Mexico City to protest against proposed changes to the electoral authority in anticipation of the upcoming June presidential elections.

The government of Mexico City reported a turnout of approximately 90,000 people in Zocalo Square, while organizers of the rally claimed the number was significantly higher.

The opposition alleges that President Andrés Manuel López Obrador is attempting to undermine the National Electoral Institute (INE), an independent and non-partisan entity.

López Obrador contends that the INE is biased and plagued by corruption, BBC reported.

Since winning the presidential elections in 2018, he has advocated for a reform of the INE, asserting that it will lead to annual savings of $150 million (£119 million) by substantially reducing the agency’s workforce.

The demonstration in the historic square on Sunday represents the latest in a series of protests against governmental actions in Mexico over recent years.
