American ballerina Ksenia Karelina is detained for ‘high treason’ in Russia

The Federal Security Service, known for its secrecy, has apprehended a dual Russian-American ballerina on charges of treason, as confirmed by officials on Tuesday.

Footage released by a Russian news agency depicts 32-year-old Ksenia Karelina being escorted into a courtroom wearing handcuffs and a blindfold over her eyes. The timing of the video remains unclear.

Originally a resident of Los Angeles, Karelina obtained US citizenship in 2021 and frequently shared photos on her social media showcasing her life in the United States.

Her arrest coincided with Vladimir Putin’s controversial interview with Tucker Carlson in January, taking place outside a Yekaterinburg movie theater. Initial charges were related to swearing offenses.

Yekaterinburg, the largest city in the Ural region, was also the location where Wall Street Journal journalist Evan Gershkovich was arrested on espionage charges almost a year ago, the Daily Mail reported.

Following Karelina’s initial arrest, additional accusations surfaced, alleging her involvement in fundraising for a Ukrainian military cause.

Specifically, she is charged with transferring $51.80 from an American bank account to the Ukrainian charity Razom.

Treason charges in Russia carry potential penalties of up to 20 years in prison. Since 2023, 63 individuals have faced treason charges in Russia, with 37 being found guilty.

The White House and State Department are aware of reports indicating the detention of a dual U.S.-Russia citizen in Russia.
