Residents along the East Coast are puzzled following numerous reports of a luminous ball of light streaking across the night sky.
The meteoric event was captured on a security camera in Virginia.
Contrary to expectations, the American Meteor Society notes that there was no meteor shower predicted during that period.
The organization received 225 reports of a brilliant fireball in 11 states, extending from Massachusetts to parts of Canada, WWLP 22 News reported.
According to their findings, the fireball’s trajectory passed directly over Pennsylvania.
NASA explains that meteoroids entering Earth’s atmosphere are termed meteors, and upon striking the ground, they are classified as meteorites.
The space agency approximates that Earth encounters 48.5 tons of space matter on a daily basis. However, a significant portion of this material undergoes combustion and remains unseen.
Only a fraction, less than 5% of meteors, manages to endure the intense friction and velocities surpassing 25,000 miles per hour to reach Earth’s surface.
