Supporters of the Make America Great Again (MAGA) movement, led by former President Donald Trump, expressed anger on social media following the arrest of investigative reporter Steve Baker by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
Baker, associated with the conservative news outlet Blaze Media, was apprehended on Friday due to his coverage of the Capitol Riot on January 6, 2021.
The riot, instigated by a mob of Trump supporters, aimed to disrupt the certification of Joe Biden’s 2020 election win, fueled by claims of widespread voter fraud made by Trump.
Blaze Media shared a video on social media, showing Baker in handcuffs being led away by two men.
Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, a staunch Trump supporter, condemned the arrest, asserting that the Biden regime had arrested Baker for covering the events of January 6.
While some agreed with Greene, others questioned Baker’s journalistic integrity, prompting debates on social media.
Notable figures like Vivek Ramaswamy and Chad Prather expressed concerns about the freedom of the press.
Baker’s arrest drew attention from various quarters, including Glenn Beck, the founder of Blaze Media, who remarked on the peculiar timing of the FBI’s actions, Newsweek reported.
Baker, in posts leading up to his arrest, revealed that he was facing charges related to the January 6 events but emphasized that they were non-violent misdemeanors.
Despite assurances from the government that his detention would be brief, Baker expressed frustration at what he perceived as a personal humiliation treatment.
In a court filing dated February 21, Baker is charged with offenses such as Knowingly Entering or Remaining in any Restricted Building or Grounds Without Lawful Authority, Disorderly and Disruptive Conduct in a Restricted Building or Ground, Disorderly Conduct in a Capitol Building, and Parading, Demonstrating, or Picketing in a Capitol Building.
The circumstances surrounding Baker’s arrest have fueled discussions about the challenges faced in the pursuit of truth and the government’s response to narratives deviating from their prescribed versions of events.
