Russia has initiated the deployment of a potent aerial bomb, resulting in the severe weakening of Ukrainian defenses and a significant shift in the frontline dynamics.
This has been accomplished by transforming a basic Soviet-era weapon, the FAB-1500, into a gliding bomb capable of creating a crater with a diameter of fifteen meters.
The FAB-1500, a 1.5-tonne munition with nearly half of its composition consisting of high explosives, is released from fighter jets flying at a distance of approximately 60-70 kilometers.
This range positions it beyond the reach of many Ukrainian air defenses, CNN reported.
The strategic approach employed by Russia involves inflicting extensive destruction before pursuing territorial gains, exemplified by the devastating impact of the FAB-1500.
Equipped with a guidance system and deployable wings, the FAB-1500 is directed toward its target, enabling it to glide effectively.
The utilization of FAB bombs emerges as a pivotal component of Russia’s offensive strategy in the Donetsk region, notably contributing to the destruction of Ukrainian defenses in and around Avdiivka, which succumbed in February.
