Skier, 20, dies after 600-foot fall from New Hampshire mountain

A tragic incident unfolded on Mount Washington as a 20-year-old skier, Madison Saltsburg, plummeted 600 feet to her demise on Sunday.

Stormy and icy conditions on the towering New England peak led to challenging rescue operations over the weekend, with at least two other individuals requiring assistance.

Saltsburg lost her life after slipping off Tuckerman Ravine, a steep glacial slope on the southeast face of Mount Washington, according to NBC affiliate WBTS-TV News.

This tragic event followed a previous incident the day before, where three people became stranded on the mountain, resulting in two individuals sustaining non-life-threatening injuries that necessitated a rescue operation.

Colleen Mainville, a spokesperson for the US Forest Service, stated, “The snow rangers and emergency personnel were up there late last night,” highlighting the difficulties posed by snow and heavy winds during the rescue efforts.

Approximately a foot of snow was anticipated. While Mount Washington is popular among backcountry skiers, its notoriety lies in its rapid and unpredictable weather changes, frequently prompting rescue operations.
