Ambassadors from Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania have issued a stark warning to NATO about the looming threat of a Russian invasion, potentially targeting the Baltic states.
They emphasized the urgency of being prepared for Russia’s potential aggression, which they fear could be concealed by misinformation tactics.
The diplomats highlighted their countries’ painful history of Soviet occupation and stressed the need for collective defense within NATO.
They called for faster decision-making within the alliance and increased investment in defense capabilities.
The ambassadors also advocated for Ukraine’s eventual accession to NATO, seeing it as crucial for both Ukraine’s security and the strength of the alliance, the Telegraph reported.
Their intervention comes amidst concerns over Ukraine’s ability to withstand Russian pressure and uncertainty about NATO’s future, compounded by delays in US military aid to Ukraine and the possibility of a US withdrawal from the alliance.
The diplomats hinted at the UK’s pivotal role in bolstering NATO’s capabilities, suggesting a need for increased defense spending.
This plea aligns with recent calls within the UK for a higher military budget, including proposals to reintroduce conscription as a deterrent against Russian aggression.
