A bus transporting University of South Carolina students, members of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity and their guests, to an event in New Orleans, suffered a blowout and crashed into a concrete barrier in Mississippi.
Eleven people were injured, with the driver and a student critically wounded and airlifted to hospitals.
The bus driver, Tina Wilson, exhibited remarkable strength in controlling the vehicle after the blowout, preventing a potentially more catastrophic outcome.
Another student, Paul Clune, assisted in steering the bus to a stop. University officials arranged alternate travel for uninjured students and offered support services for those affected, the New York Post has reported.
Investigations are underway regarding the accident, with the bus company, Dixon Motor Xpress, expressing confidence in their safety measures and praising Wilson’s expertise as a driver.
