After authorities discovered his illegal importation of exotic animals, Marius Joubert, a 28-year-old security guard in South Africa, chose a tragic end to his troubles.
Facing potential long-term imprisonment for his illicit activities, Joubert opted to have his own snakes bite him, leading to his agonizing death.
During a police search of his home in Hennenman, officers found over 60 snakes, along with other exotic creatures.
Joubert deliberately provoked the snakes into biting him, resulting in lethal venom entering his system.
Despite efforts to save him, including hurried hospital treatment, the lack of appropriate antivenom led to his demise, the Mirror reported.
The incident has prompted investigations into the origin of the exotic pets and raised concerns about animal welfare.
The neglected animals were rescued by the Bloemfontein Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), with plans for their care and rehabilitation.
However, many of the foreign exotic animals may need to be euthanized due to the circumstances surrounding Joubert’s actions.
