FBI Director Christopher Wray gave a speech warning of China as the biggest threat to national security, stating that the country is becoming more aggressive in its efforts to steal secrets and undermine the US security and economy.
He emphasized that China’s hacking program is larger than that of any other major nation, and that their cyber personnel far outnumber FBI agents.
Wray detailed China’s tactics involving traditional and economic espionage, foreign influence, election interference, and transnational repression, including recruiting human sources to target American businesses.
He also highlighted examples of Chinese students and professors facing pressure on American campuses and warned of potential cyberattacks on US critical infrastructure, the Mirror reported.
Wray pointed out that China has been positioning for cyberattacks since 2011, setting up access to sectors like telecommunications, energy, and water in preparation to cause harm to American citizens.
