Forty-three Senate Republicans demand Schumer hold full Mayorkas impeachment trial

The majority of Republican senators, led by Sen. Lindsey Graham, are urging Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer to ensure a full impeachment trial for Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.

Forty-three GOP senators signed a letter emphasizing the constitutional responsibility to adjudicate the House’s impeachment.

Some Republicans, like Sens. Lisa Murkowski, Susan Collins, and Mitt Romney, did not sign, questioning the evidence.

Sens. Tommy Tuberville, Bill Cassidy, and Rand Paul also did not sign, reasons unclear. Democrats plan to swiftly dismiss the charges, but Schumer hasn’t revealed his plans, the Washington Examiner has reported.

House Speaker Mike Johnson delayed delivering the articles to Schumer to give senators more time. Republicans fear Democrats might use a procedural tool to end the trial quickly.

They argue that the American people deserve a full trial amid concerns about the southern border and Mayorkas’s conduct.
