Avalanche in Yosemite ‘sounded like bomb’

While hiking in Yosemite National Park, California resident Mikey Wright witnessed a large avalanche from a distance.

Wright, an experienced hiker in the park, described the avalanche as sounding like a bomb going off, originating from a subdome near Half Dome.

He estimated the avalanche to be about a quarter-mile away and noted a 300-foot-wide section of ice breaking off.

The event, captured on video and shared online, prompted warnings about the dangers of snowmelt causing avalanches and hazardous conditions near waterfalls in the park, the San Francisco Gate has reported.

Steve Mace, from the Eastern Sierra Avalanche Center, confirmed the avalanche as a “loose wet avalanche” likely triggered by warming temperatures.

While Yosemite is not directly within the Center’s forecasting region, their assessments are applicable due to the park’s proximity.

Yosemite National Park advises visitors to stay away from avalanche-prone areas and steep slopes to avoid accidents.
