A container ship, the Dali, caused a fatal collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, resulting in the deaths of six roadwork crew members.
Prior to departure, the ship experienced electrical issues, indicated by alarms on refrigerated containers.
Despite this, it set sail for Sri Lanka. Investigations by the National Transportation Safety Board and the FBI are underway, focusing on the ship’s electrical system and potential legal violations.
Mayor Brandon Scott announced plans for legal action against parties involved, the Associated Press reported.
The ship’s owner, Synergy Marine Group, and operator, Grace Ocean Private Ltd., seek to limit their liability to $43.6 million under maritime law, prompting criticism from victims’ attorneys.
The incident underscores broader concerns about bridge safety in the U.S., highlighted by recent incidents like a barge collision in Pittsburgh.
