Over 13 million Ecuadorians are anticipated to participate in a referendum on Sunday, focusing on security issues that could influence the political trajectory of President Daniel Noboa and his crime-fighting agenda.
Noboa, who assumed office last November, pledged to tackle the escalating crime rates in Ecuador.
He has since pursued an aggressive approach, declaring war on criminal gangs, imposing a state of emergency, and approving a controversial raid on the Mexican embassy to apprehend a former vice president accused of corruption.
The outcome of the referendum will gauge public support for Noboa’s policies and may impact his decision on seeking re-election in 2025, CNN reported.
The referendum poses 11 questions, including proposals to empower the military to assist the police in combating organized crime, allow the extradition of Ecuadorians, and enhance penalties for violent offenses.
Noboa emphasizes the urgency of security reforms to safeguard the nation, advocating for robust support for law enforcement and the armed forces.
