‘Europe could die’: Macron urges stronger defenses, economic reforms

French President Emmanuel Macron delivered a speech at Sorbonne University, advocating for a more assertive European Union with stronger integrated defenses.

He warned of the risk of Europe’s decline and emphasized the need to resist becoming dependent on the United States.

Macron called for increased European military capabilities, cybersecurity, and closer defense ties with post-Brexit Britain.

He urged Europeans to prioritize buying European-made military equipment and emphasized the importance of European “strategic autonomy.”

Macron’s speech received positive feedback from German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, highlighting their shared goal of a strong Europe, Reuters reported.

This stance, aiming for less reliance on the U.S., has gained traction amid concerns about the potential return of Donald Trump to the White House.
