Haiti Prime Minister Ariel Henry resigns, transitional council takes power

Haitian Prime Minister Ariel Henry has resigned, clearing the path for a transitional council to govern the troubled nation.

Henry announced his resignation in a letter posted on social media, citing his administration’s service during challenging times.

The transitional council, officially installed the following day, will oversee the formation of a new government. In the interim, Economy Minister Michel Patrick Boisvert has been appointed as interim prime minister.

The council, tasked with setting the agenda for a new cabinet and organizing provisional electoral processes, aims to address Haiti’s widespread insecurity exacerbated by gang violence, Al-Jazeera reported.

However, concerns remain over the exclusion of gang leaders from transitional negotiations and their potential response to the new council.

The international community has called for prioritizing security efforts in Haiti, where gang violence has displaced hundreds of thousands and exacerbated food insecurity for millions.
