Ohio woman, 74, arrested in armed robbery of credit union was a victim of a scam

Ann Mayers, a 74-year-old woman with no prior legal issues, was arrested and charged with armed robbery at an Ohio credit union, north of Cincinnati.

Her relatives claim she fell victim to an online scam and may have committed the robbery to alleviate financial troubles.

Mayers, held on $100,000 bond, allegedly used a handgun in the robbery, but authorities are investigating her claims of being scammed.

Despite sympathy for her situation, police assert that Mayers victimized others by robbing the bank. Her family allegedly ignored her discussions about robbing banks leading up to the incident.

Experts highlight the prevalence of scams targeting seniors, exploiting their familial bonds and online information, NBC News reported.

This incident mirrors a recent case where an 81-year-old Ohio man fatally shot an Uber driver, believing her to be part of a scam to extract money for a relative.
