The United States called for a halt to arms sales to Sudan’s warring factions, citing the alarming situation in Darfur, where a genocide occurred two decades ago.
U.S. Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield warned of a potential large-scale massacre in El Fasher, the only Darfur capital not held by paramilitary forces.
She urged all nations to recognize the looming crisis and pressed for immediate de-escalation efforts and humanitarian access.
The conflict, ignited in April 2023 between Sudan’s military and the RSF paramilitary, has caused widespread devastation, with foreign weapons exacerbating the violence.
Regional powers, including Egypt and Russia, have been implicated in supplying arms, the Associated Press reported.
The conflict’s toll includes over 14,000 dead, looming famine, and millions displaced.
The RSF’s brutal attacks evoke memories of the Darfur genocide, prompting concerns of war crimes and crimes against humanity.
